BCMG triumphantly premiered Crowd Out in the huge atrium of Birmingham’s Millennium Point on Sunday 8 June 2014, with two mid-afternoon performances attended by over 1100 people.
Led by Music Director Simon Halsey, the 1000 participants and 20 vocal leaders/group conductors spread out over four levels, surrounding the audience (from which they emerged to begin the piece). James Yarker‘s restrained gestures and movements subtly added to the work’s power, which Halsey led through simple but effective system using coloured flags and simple gestures.
Spitalfields Music went outdoors for the London premieres on Saturday 21 June 2014, with the tree encircled raised bandstand of Arnold Circus providing a striking setting, at the heart of the community, for two performances in which participants ascended through the audience and then dispersed along London streets. And the giant outdoor piazza linking Berlin’s Kulturforum provided the setting for the German premiere performances on Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 June 2014.
The above video uses footage and audio from both Birmingham performances to provide three-minute encapsulation of Crowd Out. Watch the video in the right-hand of this page to enjoy the full 40-minute performance.
